Large share of rail freight

In Sweden, rail freight holds a market share of 25 percent of transports beyond 100 kilometres. This is a relatively high share compared to the EU average, which is around 16 percent. Compared to North America, Sweden's share of rail freight is low. Sweden was one of the first countries to de-regulate rail freight traffic and the largest actor - Green Cargo - has successfully developed in terms of quality and profitability. This has tempted additional rail operators to enter the market and customers now have a number of rail companies to choose from, which in turn has benefited the overall development of rail's market shares. Other factors that have contributed to rail's strong position in Sweden include improved cooperation with sea and road transports as well as the undeniable fact that freight trains are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
