Shunting yard
The shunting yards are the heart of Green Cargo's country-wide network for freight trains. A freight train can reach 650 meters in length and includes wagons headed for different destinations. At the shunting yards, the trains are split and wagons from different locations that are headed to the same destination are joined to form a new train. Arrival and departure checks of the wagons' loads and safety systems are also carried out at the shunting yards.
Green Cargo's largest shunting yards are located in Hallsberg, Malmö, Gothenburg and Borlänge, and operations are underway 24 hours a day with the most intensive periods being in the evenings and at night. Hallsberg's shunting yard alone shunts freight trains corresponding to more than 2,000 trucks in a 24-hour period.
